Hey everyone, I’m Lizzy!

I am a multidisciplinary artist from the Monterey Peninsula and I run the programming at Monterey Clay Studio located at 785 Broadway Avenue in Seaside, CA.

My goal with my art and the classes I teach is to help people enjoy their lives more. I firmly believe that regularly feeling joy and belonging is what creates resilient, kind humans.

My favorite thing in the world is to have a really good laugh with a stranger. Now I get to laugh with strangers on the daily and watch in wonder as they become my friends. We opened Monterey Clay Studio in September 2024 and I am thrilled to be building a business teaching ceramics classes since clay is my primary medium. Thanks for being here!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Monterey Clay Studio is located at 785 Broadway Avenue in Seaside, CA. You can park on the street in front of the studio or in the back alley.

  • Open studio memberships are not available at this time. If we develop an open studio option, it will be for folks who have already taken a class at Monterey Clay Studio. For now, studio time is limited to class time and production potting is not allowed.

  • If you miss a class you are welcome to ask if you can come to another class. It will depend on if other classes are full or not. No make up classes are guaranteed.

  • There is no limit to how many pieces you produced during your session at this time. It should be noted that large shapes are harder to accommodate in our kiln so we ask that you are cognizant of this limitation.

  • Any clay or glaze not obtained at the studio must be approved by Lizzy. We fire to Cone 5 and all materials should be formulated for this temperature.

  • Monterey Clay Studio is primarily a studio for adults. Our handbuilding workshops are available to participants ages 12 and up when accompanied by a participating adult.

  • Handbuilding is working with clay off of the potter’s wheel. A variety of techniques can be used to form clay into functional or decorative art.

  • We do not offer a firing service at this time. Phoenix Ceramics Supplies (in Santa Cruz) and Clay Planet (in Santa Clara) both offer firing services.

  • Joan Wrench owns Monterey Clay Studio. Lizzy Eichorn runs her own business (Lizzy Eichorn Studios) out of the space and oversees all studio management tasks.

  • All of our classes are open to any skill level to make class times available to more people. Intermediate to advanced students often come with project ideas and instructors help coach them through their process as needed.

Due to the small class size, instructors have time to demonstrate multiple different techniques in one class session, enabling them to teach to all levels.

  • Yes! We are a very beginner friendly studio. We give you all of the instructions you will need to be successful at making pottery no matter the experience you come in with.

  • Not at this time. You must sign up for an eight-week session to have studio access on a regular basis. Weekend workshops offer opportunities for shorter clay experiences. Registration is required prior to attending any class.

  • Private lessons may be accommodated if they work with instructor schedules.

Please send us a message here to discuss further.

Due to the nature of working with clay, at least three classes will be necessary to create a finished product.

Private lessons for children may be accommodated for youth over the age of 12 when a participating adult is present.

  • Yes! If you would like more time at the wheel, you can sign up for multiple classes. When people come to class twice per week, they often progress much quicker than someone coming once per week. However, the once per week option is sufficient for beginners to have success.

  • All unfired projects must be finished and placed on the greenware shelf by the end of class in Week 7 (no exceptions).  If you are in a throwing class, that means that Week 6 is the last week to throw new work. Week 8 is glazing week. All of your pieces may not be ready to glaze by Week 8. You are welcome to come back to finish glazing during class times in the next session.

  • Bisqueware and glazeware will be held for up to a month from the time the pieces are fired. Any unfired work left on the classroom shelves after Week 7 will be recycled.

  • We do not have sufficient space for people to store personal items at the studio. If you have your own tools, please bring them to class in a portable container and take them home with you at the end of class. You may leave your clay at the studio.
